Energy Consumption

The total energy (converted in joules) consumed through business activities of Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd in FY 2006 amounted to 969,012GJ and 67% of which was purchased electricity. Energy saving activities included operational improvement of air conditioning and cooling equipments at research facilities as well as production sites and highly efficient equipments were adopted at various sites.

CO2 Emission Volume and Emission per Unit of Sales (in 6 OPC sites)

CO2 emission per unit of sales in our business activities in FY 2006 showed 12.4 ton/hundred million of sales (reduced by 18.1% from 1990 level) and failed to achieve our annual target. And the total volume of CO2 emission increased by 7.2% from the previous year due to the commencement of newly equipped production lines.

Control of Chemical Substances

Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. is focusing particularly on organochlorine solvents in our continuous efforts to reduce emissions of harmful chemical substances. In FY 2006 the total emission volume of organochlorine solvents amounted to 2,012kg (reduced by 38.9% from FY 1990 levels). However, the figure was below our annual target of Reduction by 50% from FY 2000 levels due to partial improperness of recovery equipment system. We are to improve recovery equipment system and at the same time reinforce management structure in order to increase recovery ratio.

Reduction of Waste Disposal

In FY 2006, the total volume of waste substances from the business activities of six OPC factories in Japan was 4,927 tons which exceeds that of the previous year by 84% due to the commencement of operation of newly equipped production lines. Of the total volume only 138 tons (reduced by 45% from the previous year) of waste was brought to landfills which represents 91.6% of reduction from FY 1996.

Product and Technology Development

Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. which produces a wide variety of products such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, beverages and foods is developing every product from a standpoint of 3Rs (Reduce/Reuse/Recycle) as well. We are also working to build effective recycling systems through various associations and industry groups involved in container recycling. In every area of our business field including pharmaceuticals, we are committed to ongoing technology development to supply products with less environmental impact.
A good example of lightweight and easy-to-recycle container which contributes to resource/energy savings and reduction of CO2 emission is "ECOBOTTLE" for Pocari Sweat 500ml PET bottle. The bottle of the product which was launched into the market just recently weighs only 18g to be the lightest of the kind in Japanese market. This has been realized through a new technology of "positive pressure aseptic filling".
