Pharmaceuticals Research and Development

Based on the theme 'developing original new drugs in accordance with medical needs,' Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. conducts pre-clinical development primarily in Japan. Subsequent clinical development is conducted via our networks in various parts of the world. Our activities are focused on the specific areas of the central nervous system, the vascular and circulatory system, the digestive and respiratory systems, ophthalmology and dermatology. We are applying the fruits of our genome research in keeping with our goal of developing "personalized medicine," and utilizing our internal and external networks to further our approach to new drug creation and diagnostic and preventive solutions.

Recently, we have obtained approval for a reliably safe next-generation atypical antipsychotic with a unique pharmacological mechanism, initially in North and South America and subsequently in the EU and Asian nations. We are currently conducting clinical development of proprietary pharmaceuticals, including diuretic and anti-inflammatory agents, around the world. We are also pursuing ways to expand applications and devise additional formulations for our existing products, hoping to make drug administration more convenient and stress-free.

In the fields of clinical diagnostics and reagents, we are progressing with development of reagents and measuring methods for simple detection of gastric ulcers, development of stable isotope products, and the commercialization of various gene-related technologies.

Otsuka Pharmaceutical Group is engaged in the development of nutrition products to support day-to-day well-being, based on the concept of Nutraceuticals*. Based on scientific data tracking nutritional needs for various age groups and physical conditions, our roster of innovative products that have created entirely new markets include Pocari Sweat, an electrolyte supplement beverage based on the balance of human body liquids, Calorie Mate balanced nutritional products, and dietary fiber-rich FIBE-MINI.

2003, our ongoing efforts to create truly innovative products resulted in the development of Amino-Value, an essential amino acid beverage formulated with BCAA (branched chain amino acids). In the chilled products field, we have developed Yasainosenshi, a fermented lactic acid beverage, and Sugoi Daizu, a beverage containing all the goodness of whole soy beans.

Over the past decade, our research into developing Cosmedics**, based on the theme of 'health that starts with your skin,' led us to focus on the mechanism of "EnergySignalAMP" which promotes the turnover of skin cells and suppresses the accumulation of melanin. Based on this discovery, we have launched a new series of skin care products * InnerSignal.
