Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (OPC; Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Tatsuo Higuchi; TEL: +81-3-3292-0021) published "Environmental and Social Report 2005" at the end of October 2005. For chemical substance management during the year 2004, the period covered in the "Environmental and Social Report 2005," OPC reduced atmospheric emission of chlorinated organic solvents by 29.7% relative to the year 2000. CO2 emission per unit of sales was reduced by 9.3% but the total amount was increased by 5.3% relative to the year 1990. The main case of this increase is the production quantity increase. The amount of final waste disposal was reduced by 84.7% relative to the year 1996.

OPC reports the actual opinions of on-site factory managers and company employees as much as possible in the compilation of the "Environmental and Social Report 2005," which has been published for the past 3 years with the subtitle "Place for Learning." Also, the following contents are newly added:

  1. Efforts of Tokyo Head Office, Osaka Headquarters, and the consolidated company, Fukuroi Factory of Otsuka Beverage Co., Ltd. are reported in the "Site Report."
  2. Environmental efforts of the consolidated company, Otsuka Warehouse Co., Ltd. are reported in "Distribution of Goods."
  3. Efforts for securing employees’ health and safety are reported in "Health and Safety".

The "Environmental and Social Report 2005" continues to use the subtitle of "Otsuka Academy of (the) Environment" with the intention of making the report a "Place for Learning" about the environment for the company employees. In the year 2004, OPC sought to increase understanding of environmental and social activities in all employees through such events as study sessions using communications satellite broadcasting.

In the future, OPC will establish more concrete action plans for environmental objectives and will seek to promote these plans. Furthermore, OPC strives to broaden the range of efforts by its back-office sections and the quality of its reports, while trying to expand the coverage of the efforts done by its consolidated companies.

OPC constantly places special care for its effect on the natural environment and local communities and would like to engage in business activities that lead to their preservation and growth.
