Business Overview (International)

Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. has established businesses around the world, based on the Otsuka Pharmaceutical Group's common goal of "contributing to the health and well-being of people the world over."

The Group's overseas expansion began in 1973 with the establishment of Thai Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. At present, Group companies are conducting business and forging close ties with their local communities in 18 countries and regions, with a focus on Europe, the U.S.A., and Asia. Amidst an increasing trend toward globalization, Group companies share business networks, conducting a broad spectrum of activities from research and development through production and sales in a spirit of friendly rivalry.

Europe

Otsuka Pharmaceutical Europe Ltd (OPEL), established in the U.K. in 1998, serves as the headquarters for pharmaceutical operations which span Germany, Spain, the U.K., the Nordic and Baltic States and France. The Otsuka Frankfurt Research Institute spearheads our research operations in Europe.

European products include the antipsychotic Abilify®, the antiplatelet agent PLETAL® for intermittent claudication, Adacolumn®, an innovative medical device used to treat chronic inflammatory diseases, Mikelan® eye drops for the treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension and UBiT®, a breath test for the detection of helicobacter pylori. We are also exploring new business opportunities in the European marketplace.

U.S.A.

In the U.S.A., more than 10 Otsuka Pharmaceutical Group companies are active in the pharmaceuticals and consumer products fields.

Our pharmaceutical business in the U.S.A. began with the establishment of our Maryland office in 1973, followed by the establishment of Maryland Laboratories as a basic research facility in 1985. In 1989, we established Otsuka America, Inc. (OAI) as the headquarters of our U.S. business and Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, Inc. (OAPI) as a base for our pharmaceuticals business. At present, we are engaged in research and development and sale of pharmaceuticals, and we are also expanding our operations in the diagnostics and reagents field.

OAPI currently markets the antipsychotic drug Abilify®, and PLETAL®, a treatment for intermittent claudication. Otsuka Pharmaceutical Development & Commercialization Inc. serves as a clinical development base and a link in our worldwide network of research facilities engaged in the development of innovative new drugs.

In the diagnostics and reagents field, our product line includes the UBiT® breath testing system using stable isotopes to identify H. pylori infection and other testing and diagnostic systems.

Otsuka Pharmaceutical Group consumer products business in the U.S.A. has become increasingly multifaceted with the addition of Ridge Vineyards, Inc. (Ridge) in 1986, Pharmavite LLC (PHV) in 1988, and Crystal Geyser Water Company (CGWC) in 1990. PHV sells the Nature Made® and Nature's Resource lines of nutritional and herbal supplements. CGWC is engaged in production and sale of Crystal Geyser Alpine Spring Water mineral water and Tejava tea beverage, while Ridge handles Monte Bello and Lytton Springs premium wines.
